Fun Vermont Winter Activities for Non-Skiers

Vermont is well known for its Green Mountains, but when the cold hits, the mountainous landscape transforms into excellent skiing terrain. However, if you are not into the downhill thrill of skiing or riding, you may be asking yourself, “What else can I do to get out of the house and enjoy winter? Lucky for you, Vermont is a serene place during the winter, and there is much to offer even if you are not hitting the slopes! Make the most of the Vermont winter season with these fun activity ideas!

Slide Into Winter Wonderland

If you enjoy the snow but are not a skier, you can still take advantage of other snow-related activities! Sledding or tubing is a great way to enjoy some snowy slopes without much skill! Hit the local park with a big hill and bring a sled or tube to have some fun this winter season. If you want something a little more robust, some local ski areas offer tubing areas that offer both straight and winding tracks. Check out Smuggler’s Notch in Jeffersonville or Sharp Park in Milton for exciting tubing adventures!

Stay Mobile This Winter

If snow tubing does not get you excited and you want something with a bit more thrill, give snowmobiling a try! Many ski resorts offer packages where you can rent equipment and explore Vermont’s beautiful vistas on a guided tour through the backcountry. With over 5,000 miles of winter snowmobiling trails in Vermont, this fun activity will leave you with a plethora of lasting memories as you traverse through an assortment of different terrains. If you find yourself in love with the sport and decide to purchase a snowmobile, there is an entire association dedicated to Vermont snowmobile travelers called VAST!

Who Said Fishing Season Was Over?

Has your tackle box just been laying around the garage taunting you? Get out on the ice and explore the wacky world of ice fishing. This unique activity is a fisherman's dream, but it's not the same game as fishing for trout on a warm sunny summer day. When the super low temperatures stroll in, and six inches or more of ice has formed on the surface, you are ready to make your trip out onto the lake or pond! If you are new to this type of fishing, you may want to get a guide to take out to learn the ropes. There are a lot more preparation and safety precautions to learn, so make sure you understand what you are getting yourself into. When you are ready to make your trek, check out this list of local fishing holes and scoop up your catch of the day: Vermont Fishing Areas.

Stay Cozy When The Temps Drop

Outdoor activities in the winter are not everyone's cup of tea (or beer). When you are ready to warm up from those frigid evenings, stop by one of Vermont’s notorious microbreweries or distilleries! With over 60 breweries and over 20 distilleries across Vermont, there is always a nice warm spot just around the corner. Additionally, there are several brew tour packages available that charter you around so you can sample an assortment of craft beers from local breweries. If you are a craft beer fanatic, make sure to check out the Brewery Challenge run by the Vermont Brewers Association!

Bring On The Romance of Wintertime

Looking to spice it up and add some extra romance for this time of year? Experience breathtaking Vermont scenery with a picturesque horse-drawn sleigh ride. Go dashing through the snow as Belgian Draft horses pull your carriage through the wintery countryside while you sit back, relax, and soak it all in. Grab a warm blanket and a warm cup of hot cocoa and make for a wonderful romantic afternoon! This loving escapade is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will never forget.
