How to Improve Your Home's Curb Appeal in 5 Easy Steps
Have you ever driven by a house and thought, “Wow, that’s a really nice looking home?” There’s a phrase for that: Curb Appeal! Curb Appeal is a fancy way of saying how well one's home and surroundings look when viewed from the road. In this article, you will learn why curb appeal is so important and how you can increase your home's curb appeal without breaking the bank!
Why is it Important?
Curb appeal is the first impression that someone will have when looking at your home. You always want to leave a good first impression, and it is no different when it comes to your home! If your home isn’t appealing from the outside, buyers may assume that the inside will look similar.
Additionally, pride of ownership is one of the “not so obvious” things buyers are looking for when it comes to buying a home. Buyers want to know that a home has been well maintained by its current owners. If the home does not appear to be well maintained from the roadside, buyers might be deterred from looking at your home altogether. The more buyers you get through the door of your home, the more likely you will be to have multiple offers, allowing you to get the most amount of money for your home.
Back to the Basics
Although it may seem obvious, you’ll want to make sure your lawn is freshly mowed, and the grass is looking luscious. Trim the hedges and shrubbery and make sure there aren’t any large tree limbs towering over the home. You don’t want the trees casting a shadow over your beautiful home! Additionally, remove any equipment or yard piles that may distract the buyer’s eyes from the primary focus, your home.
Add Some Flowers!
Flowers are a great way to spruce up the exterior of your home. Flower boxes under the windowsill and hanging planters are easy additions. Consider lining your front steps or walkway with flowers as well. Make sure you get flowers that will complement the colors of your home! Make it Sparkle!
If there is any peeling or flaking paint on the exterior of your home, you will want to touch that up before putting your home on the market. Not only will it help you boost your curb appeal, but it will also put you in a better position to accept an offer with any type of financing. Certain lenders require any peeling or cracking paint to be painted over before agreeing to lend. By painting ahead of time, you’re accomplishing two things! If you have vinyl siding, rent a pressure washer and make the outside look new again!
Let There be Light!
Curb appeal isn’t just a thing during the day; buyers shop for homes at night too! If you don’t already have porch lights, head to Home Depot and grab one for each side of the door. Make sure that the bulbs match and that they are bright! Solar-powered lights are another great addition to the exterior of your home. Line your driveway or front steps with them so potential buyers have a nicely lit walk up to your home once it gets dark!
Beep Beep- Don’t Forget the Driveway!
Easy to be overlooked, getting to the house is every bit as crucial to the curb appeal! Depending on the type of driveway, there is always something that can be done to improve its appearance. If you have asphalt that is cracking and broken, consider getting it resealed. For gravel driveways, you’ll want to make sure the gravel is smooth and that there aren’t any potholes. Be sure to fill in those long ruts on dirt driveways! The last thing you want is for someone to not even be able to make it down your driveway to see the rest of the home.
